If every event is the product of a previous choice, then the future is already determined and simply plays out life a movie: the ending never changes, and we are all simply following a script already written and decided. Others affirm that the future marks a cycle of endless return, as it was in the beginning, so it shall be in the end, or \u201crenew our days as of old.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As tempting as those visions of the future might be, and as much as they might seem to answer to a mechanistic view of the universe, Judaism has generally reached beyond it, to affirm a future that is both open and joyous. The capstone of such vision is that of Isaiah, whose words are so vital that the sages placed them front and center in the weekly Havdalah ritual. We literally start each week by reminding ourselves: \u201cThe Lord is my strength and might, and God has been my deliverance. Joyfully shall you draw water from the fountains of triumph!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With each new week, we enter a future that is meant to be more radiant than the past. Every new week offers a chance to make better choices, to fashion a better world. Relying on God\u2019s desire that each of us should shine and rise, offering us the insight to make the best possible choice and the resilient capacity to implement it, we face tomorrow with confidence and excitement. Isn\u2019t that the very heart of any deliverance? We need not repeat the past endlessly, nor are we trapped by what we have done (or what has been done to us) before. We are literally delivered from those constraints and open into a tomorrow of possibility and shimmering color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which is why we are invited to joy. Like a gushing fountain, from which water seems endlessly new and capable of washing away any accumulated crud, the future flows through us and wafts us into cool, splashing delight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomorrow is open, awaiting our choices and our expansive deeds. With joy, we will dance into that future with gratitude inspired hope, and faces shining as they can only when newly washed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are bathed with waters of joy, floating on a fountain of
