Perhaps G0d is modeling for us – for Abraham, just described as a progenitor of justice in the world – not how He achieves knowledge and passes judgment, but how we can. For though sight isn’t foolproof, it is necessary; we humans must see, or we cannot hope to know.

The role of sight in passing judgment looks (no pun intended) very different in Isaiah’s portrayal of a future idealized ruler. He will be so filled with the “spirit of God” that “he will ‘smell’ truth… he will not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear” (11:2-3). While God once modeled the human way to approach judgment justly, one day a human will instead succeed in emulating God’s justice: he won’t have to go see; he will just know, with more accuracy.

The prophet goes on to describe animals dwelling in harmony together; according to many, a metaphor for newfound peace among humans. This part of the prophecy differs from the portrayal of the son of Jesse: The king will have a sixth sense in making judgments about individuals as distinct from one another – who is guilty and who is innocent, who is worthy and who is not – while others will gain a new appreciation not of distinctions but of sameness.

“The wolf shall dwell with the lamb” (v. 6) – as if there were no significant difference between them.

“The land shall be filled with knowledge of God, as water covers the sea” (v. 9). The Chida (18th-century commentator) points out the thing about a sea is that there are deeper areas and more shallow areas – but you can’t tell by looking at the surface; the various depths are concealed by a layer of water that appears equal everywhere. So too, though people have different strengths and abilities, there will come a time when the world will be filled with enough Godly [Torah] knowledge that it won’t be readily apparent which people have which depths of knowledge.

What does it mean to see the world in a godly way? Sometimes it’s necessary to draw distinctions, and we might long for the capacity to make correct determinations instinctively, as God can. But in this idealized vision, it is a view of people as fundamentally equal that “fills the land.” Most often, that’s all we can see, and all we need to know.

2019-11-06
