So it’s no accident, that some of the people most appropriate for this 929 project on contemporary prophets are themselves poets! And poetesses. The feminist movement in particular has been graced (Paley) with an (Adrienne) rich array of (Marge) piercy-ing, prophetic voices that have contributed to this hard-won transformation to a more just, inclusive world.
This is the first in a series of feminist poets as contemporary prophets, working to change our consciousness and society.

There’s a case to be made that Grace Paley was first and foremost an antinuclear, antiwar, antiracist feminist activist who managed, in her spare time, to become one of the truly original voices of American fiction in the later twentieth century.

Paley was often asked about the connection between her politics and her fiction. In a 1985 “Fresh Air” interview, she told Terry Gross, “When you write, you illuminate what’s hidden, and that’s a political act.”

-Alexandra Schwartz, The Art and Activism of Grace Paley, https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/05/08/the-art-and-activism-of-grace-paley

Quotes from Grace Paley:

“Let us go forth with fear and courage and rage to save the world.”

“The only recognizable feature of hope is action.”

“We are in the hands of men whose power and wealth have separated them from the reality of daily life and from the imagination.
