  1. From roots to shoots<\/em>. At the end of the previous chapter we witnessed the felling of the great and proud tree representing the king of Assyria. Now we read of the royal young shoot that shall come forth from the stump of Jesse, the house of David. No coincidence!<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Extrasensory<\/em>. The future leader makes super-natural use of familiar senses. He arrives at truth and justice by smell. And he defeats the evil enemies \u201cwith the rod of his mouth And slay the wicked with the breath of his lips\u201d (verse 4).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Garden of Eden II<\/em>. Animals live in peace with each other and with humans. A baby can play with a snake. Everyone\u2019s a vegetarian. Paradise: whether this is some sort of allegory or an actual expectation for the radical repair of the world.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Exodus II<\/em>. The salvation from Assyria will be like the Exodus from Egypt: \u201cThus there shall be a highway for the other part of His people out of Assyria, such as there was for Israel when it left the land of Egypt\u201d (16).<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. When and why<\/em>? When did Isaiah give this prophecy? And is it against a backdrop of hope based on his environment – or despair?
