The eighth, ninth and tenth chapters of Isaiah is wrongly divided in the printed editions of the Tanakh.\u00a0 The bulk of the chapter (9:7-10:4), beginning with the words “A word was sent against Jacob…” is its own literary unit admonishing the people for their crimes, using a structure of a repeating phrase after each stanza of the prophecy “In all this His anger has not settled, and His Hand is still outstretched (9:11, 16, 20, 10:4),” which includes most of the 9th chapter and some of the 10th.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the chapters were divided (Bishop Stephen Langton c. 1200), a shorter Messianic vision, 9:1-6, was appended at the start of this chapter, instead of at the end of the last chapter, where it belonged.<\/span><\/p>\n

We have noted that chapter 8 focuses on Ahaz’s fear of Aram and the Northern tribes, and his concern for the future. The prophecy is designed to reassure him, and 9:1-6 provides the greatest reassurance possible by describing\u00a0 the promising future of the crown prince, already born at the time (note the past tense verbs “yulad<\/em>” and “nitan<\/em>” in 9:5), now a 9-year-old playing on the playground with his younger siblings or cousins.<\/span><\/p>\n

At some point in time in the future, after the Assyrian conquest has ended, the crown prince will preside over a time of salvation when the people see a “Great Light.” Light here is a symbol or metaphor of salvation – imagining the jailed prisoner who only finally sees light when his captives open the door to his closed cell to freedom. In that moment, the Crown Prince Hezekiah will be given authority (9:5) and be named “Eternal Father and Master of Peace,” presiding over an era of unending peace (9:6) on the throne of the Davidic dynasty, “From now until forever.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Ahaz need not worry that his enemies might kill him, his children, and his dynasty – for the crowned prince is predicted to become a Messiah who rules over an era of everlasting peace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the course of human history, some other faiths have attributed this prophecy to other figures – but within its context, God is promising to Ahaz that his child, though but small today, will become a leader of the Jewish people and lead them away from war with Assyria, and towards an era of
