\u201cMy Lord let loose a word [<\/span>davar<\/span><\/em>] against Jacob and it fell upon Israel.\u201d (7)<\/span><\/p>\n

The medieval exegetes, such as Rashi, Kara, Eliezer of Beaugency, and Ibn Ezra, identified the \u201cword\u201d in this verse with a prophecy. Malbim,* however, came up with a decidedly modern interpretation.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The prophet, here, has turned back to the ten tribes to prophesy about the catastrophe that will engulf them. Ancient people used to believe in something called an \u201coracle\u201d (\u05d0\u05e8\u05d0\u05e7\u05e2\u05dc), a voice that spread amongst the masses who thought that it was a pronouncement or an edict that had come to them from heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n

This oracle emanated largely with the masses from whom it reached the officialdom and from there it spread throughout the nation. On this basis [the prophet] describes the statement \u201cbricks have fallen\u201d (9) as though they saw it as a word that God had sent them from heaven. This began among \u201cJacob,\u201d which signifies the masses, and from there it spread among \u201cIsrael,\u201d the officialdom, to the extent that\u2026 [\u201cAll the people shall know\u201d (8)].<\/span><\/p>\n

Prophecy was once widespread in Israel, as we noted in our introduction to this book. Indeed, the Talmud declares that Isaiah was but one of four prophets who prophesied at this juncture in time. (The others were Amos, Micah, and Hoshea). While we may have their prophecies, we have little information about how they were received.<\/span><\/p>\n

Malbim seems to have believed that there was a natural inclination on people\u2019s part to view positive predictions as genuine prophecies, while consigning negative notices as mere oracles. One may wonder: had Malbim been alive today, would he have substituted \u201cfake news\u201d for oracles?<\/span><\/p>\n
