{"id":65162,"date":"2019-11-04T18:46:16","date_gmt":"2019-11-04T16:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=65162"},"modified":"2023-05-30T09:47:46","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T06:47:46","slug":"prophets-of-today-shai-held","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/prophets-of-today-shai-held\/","title":{"rendered":"Prophets Of Today: Rabbi Shai Held"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[391,436,327,410],"acf":{"old_id":"65162","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":38047,"related_cahpter":"343","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_create_date":"","old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"To remember that God loves even people we don\u2019t like","content":"<p>When I read the 929-English call for nominating prophets in our day, one name immediately came to mind, Rabbi Shai Held.<\/p>\n<p>Steadfastly insisting that the God of Israel loves the widow, orphan and refugee, and calls on us to love and care for them as well, Rabbi Held is a clear moral voice even, or especially, when society seems to be losing its ethical compass.<\/p>\n<p>In the face of news cycles in which outrage follows scandal follows outrage in an interminable loop, Rav Shai calls on us to see the forgotten people suffering on the margins of society, give voice to those who cannot speak for themselves or whose voices are silenced, and ask the hardest questions, like \u201cWhat are we really willing to do to put an end to entrenched poverty?\u201d He never deludes himself or others that any of this is easy, or a good way to make friends. To the contrary, Rabbi Held stresses that we are commanded not to deny fear but to overcome it, run towards the things that scare us and remember that the service of God happens in the space between the difficult and the impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Like the Biblical prophets, Rabbi Held takes his learning, teaching and preaching out of the study hall, to audiences beyond self-selecting believers and followers, into the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century\u2019s public squares, speaking truth to power on social media, in the Jewish press, on CNN online and even the pages of Christian Century. Broadcasting the prophetic message to people who would rather not hear it, who place their hope in political power or the delusion that a later-day equivalent of the Temple will save them, means that Rav Shai is also the subject of viperous attacks. That is \u2013 in part \u2013 the reason I am writing this, as a sign of appreciation for Torah well-taught, and the relentless challenge to be a little better, and little more caring every
