  1. Names which carry messages<\/em>. The prophet expresses difficult messages of destruction. But in the names of his sons, Shear-jashub (3) \u201cthe remnant shall return,\u201d and Immanuel (14) \u201cGod is with us,\u201d there is a glimmer of hope. God does not abandon His people, and all those who are left after the troubles shall return to him. More special names to come in the next chapter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Age of maturity<\/em>. When does a child know \u201cto reject the bad and choose the good\u201d (16)? Two-years old? Three? 13? 30? What do you think?<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. A land flowing with butter and honey<\/em>. The menu of the difficult days of destruction actually sounds quite cushy: \u201ceveryone who is left in the land shall feed on curds and honey\u201d (22). But this actually is more of a sign of desolation in the fields and groves (see David Curwin\u2019s piece on today\u2019s page). No agriculture – not very cushy at all.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. A real buzz-cut<\/em>. That\u2019s how the prophet describes the Assyrian empire and what they will do to the region: \u201cIn that day, my Lord will cut away with the razor that is hired beyond the Euphrates\u2014with the king of Assyria\u2014the hair of the head and the hair of the legs, and it shall clip off the beard as well\u201d (20). Note that the razor is the king of Assyria, but the hand which holds it – is God\u2019s.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. How did it all turn out?<\/em> If you\u2019ve read the Book of Kings (2 Kings 16-17), then you know. Ahaz made an alliance with Assyria, which saved the kingdom of Judah from Aram and Israel. But as the prophet said, in the end, it was the growing power of Assyria that brought about the great destruction. The kingdom of Israel was destroyed in the year 721 BCE, and Judah suffered then as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
