David Kimchi), the 6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chapter of our book is a prophetic reflection on the circumstances of the great earthquake that took place in the middle of Uzziah\u2019s reign. We know from elsewhere in the Bible that there was a memorable earthquake at the time (Amos 1:1, Zechariah 14:5), which people still recalled centuries later.\u00a0 One imagines that many people attributed this earthquake to a chance occurrence of nature, but the mission of the prophet is to explain that such events really come from God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter 2 taught us that a big part of Uzziah\u2019s arrogance stemmed from his infrastructural construction program, and an earthquake would serve to humble the king by leveling all of the towers and buildings. A loud voice heard by the prophet causes the pillars of the building to shake (6:4), capturing the earthquake in vivid imagery.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This prophecy relates the earthquake to an event in the Temple (&#8220;heichal&#8221; in 6:1), a holy place with an altar (6:3, 6).\u00a0 We recall here the story of Uzziah\u2019s ill-fated decision to offer a sacrifice in the Temple, detailed in 2 Chronicles (26:16-21). The arrogant king felt that the regular rules which applied to every other Jew did not apply to him, and so he transgressed, and adopted a priestly role for himself. Chronicles details the personal punishment the king received for his betrayal \u2013 a public plague of leprosy on his forehead which forced him to renounce his rule and required him to leave the walled city of Jerusalem (is this his death in 6:1?). This prophecy adds a second, wider punishment for the king: the destruction of all of his precious building projects through the earthquake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prophecy imagines God sitting on his throne in the Heavens, with the feet of the throne on Earth (6:1), and a collection of fire-angels proclaiming God\u2019s holiness (6:2-3). If the king might think that the Temple was his house, the prophecy indicates that the Temple is God\u2019s own house!\u00a0 Even the prophet is implicated for his failure to admonish or stop the king (6:5-7), although he receives forgiveness after being punished with a coal upon his lips.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This prophecy concludes the short opening section of the book devoted to Uzziah. The arrogant king is no longer a factor, now living outside the walls of the city as his son Yotam serves as regent in the land. Times will change drastically over the course of the next few decades, and the story resumes with Uzziah\u2019s grandson in chapter
