{"id":64907,"date":"2019-10-29T11:54:53","date_gmt":"2019-10-29T09:54:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=64907"},"modified":"2023-05-24T08:40:32","modified_gmt":"2023-05-24T05:40:32","slug":"prophets-of-today-therapists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/prophets-of-today-therapists\/","title":{"rendered":"Prophets of Today: Therapists"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[937,386,327],"acf":{"old_id":"64907","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":36663,"related_cahpter":"339","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_create_date":"","old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"Helping people live a purposeful and meaningful life with adequate guidance and self-reflection","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every prophet has a different kind of relationship with God.\u00a0 For Jonah, at least in chapter 4, God seems to be a psychotherapist par excellence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though Jonah has just excelled at delivering the commission God has given him to speak to the city of Nineveh, causing repentance with five meagre words (Jonah 3:4), he is unable to function effectively in the world, so much so that he wishes to die. In response to Jonah\u2019s statement that his death is better than his life (4:3, 8) God responds twice in the same words, \u201cis it good to you, this anger of yours?\u201d (4:4, 9).\u00a0 We could also translate God\u2019s question to Jonah as \u201chow does that anger work for you? And why?\u201d It is a therapeutic response, probing Jonah and his reasons for responding to his success with a desire for death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jonah has effected change in the external world; it is his own internal compass that God must help him fix.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetorah.com\/article\/jonahs-magical-mystery-tour-of-the-netherworld\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Rachel Adelman writes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about a midrash that sees Jonah as going on a tour of the netherworld in the fish\u2019s belly and says\u00a0 the midrash conveys that, \u201cIn other words, Jonah\u2019s mission to Nineveh is secondary; the real point of the story is what happens in the belly of the fish.\u201d In this view, Jonah\u2019s prayer itself is most crucial to the story. Somehow, in the belly of the whale, Jonah is able to pray and articulate his desires and yet when he prays again, in 4:2-3, his supplication ends with a plea for his death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God does not give up on Jonah, but continues to question him: if you care about the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> kikayon <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(gourd) plant, why shouldn\u2019t I care about this city of 120,000 individuals as well as many cattle?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A prophet can\u2019t operate without a therapeutic relationship to God, which is why I see therapists as the prophets of our time. A therapist such as Lori Gottlieb, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe You Should Talk to Someone <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear Therapist <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">columnist at The Atlantic, is the prophet for our time as she showcases how people can get onto a track of living a purposeful and meaningful life with adequate guidance and self-reflection, as we hope Jonah will do under God\u2019s continued guidance. But the book of Jonah ends, perhaps like a good therapy session, with a question for us to ponder as we leave the curative presence of the text of the book or of a good analyst. Though we are left with questions, we need therapists as prophets to keep asking
