God complains: \u201cI reared children and brought them up and they have rebelled against me!\u201d\u00a0 Then God goes into detail: \u201cAn ox knows its owner, an ass its master&#8217;s crib: Israel does not know, my people takes no thought&#8230; they continue to sin, and yet should know better!\u201d The Holy One is not thrilled: \u201cWhat need have I of all your sacrifices? \u2026 Everything you do fills me with loathing, your observances, your holy days&#8230;\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words: you, reader, might go through the motions of your religious and spiritual lives; but without action, they are nothing. So do the right thing now! Our chapter tells us that this means to work on behalf of justice and to come to the help of the wronged. \u201cUphold the rights of the orphan; defend the cause of the widow.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Provencal grammarian and commentator David Kimchi (d. 1235), also known as Radak, explains that Isaiah singled out orphans and widows because \u201cyou do not open your ears to their screams.\u201d It can be easy to ignore those who whose voices we do not hear, he reminds us: those who have no strong lobby behind them, those without clout, who are silently suffering on the margins, hidden away from our gaze. Interestingly, Radak notes that \u201clearning to do good\u201d entails in fact both, learning from the good, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> learning from the not so good. Both negative and positive events and experiences, then, are our models in the struggle for a more just and sustainable world. This includes suffering, and also the recognition of our own shortcomings in alleviating pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah 1 is read on Shabbat Chazon (\u201cVision\u201d), the shabbat preceding the ninth of Av, a fast day dedicated to mourning that recalls the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and many other horrors of our collective past. The chapter lifts up the fast and its suffering: even before we begin to absorb Isaiah\u2019s messages in the yearly reading of the seven <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">haftarot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of consolation that are customarily recited on the shabbatot between the ninth of Av and Rosh Hashanah, our text hints at the dawn of a
