  1. Earth and Heaven<\/em>. Isaiah\u2019s prophecy begins thus: \u201cHear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth!\u201d (verse 2). If this reminds you of\u00a0 \u201cGive ear, O heavens, let me speak; Let the earth hear the words I utter!\u201d from Moses\u2019 song of Haazinu 150 chapters ago (Deut 32), it\u2019s probably not a coincidence. The heavens and the earth are the natural witnesses to the cosmic covenant between God and the people. And when the covenant is broken, they re-enter the picture, and told that Israel \u201chas forsaken the Lord\u201d (verse 4).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Sodom squared<\/em>. Sodom (and Gomorrah) are mentioned twice in the prophecy. In verse 9, as the image of total destruction that almost befell Judah, and in verse 10, as the image of total corruption and evil that exist in Judah.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The Temple schedule<\/em>. Verses 11-15 describe the routine Temple cult in Jerusalem, that which is no longer desirable: sacrifices, offerings, oblations, incense, pilgrimage, new moons, sabbaths and holidays, and even assemblies and \u201cProclaiming of solemnities.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. \u201cEicha!\u201d – A lament<\/em>. \u201cAlas, how she has become a harlot, The faithful city That was filled with justice\u2026\u201d (verse 21) asks the prophet in a query of rebuke, even as he mourns the situation. It is a lament that echoes in the ears of those who hear it throughout the generations, that other great lament: \u201cAlas! Lonely sits the city once great with people! She that was great among nations is become like a widow\u201d (Lamentations 1:1).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
