When he heard what was written in this Book, the king tore his clothes in despair and mourning, apparently now realizing how he and the people had been sinning (II Kings 22:1-13). When the Prophetess Hulda is consulted (verse 14) she foretells the destruction of Jerusalem, because of the idolatry of the people, according to what was written in the Book that had been discovered (see the admonishments in Deuteronomy 28:15-68).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But because Josiah had been \u201ctender\u201d (rakh) in humbling himself before the Lord when he heard what was written in the newly discovered Book, King Josiah would die in peace without living to witness the destruction of his capital, Jerusalem (verses 15-20).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Talmud Bavli Megillah 14a, Hulda was one of seven prophetesses mentioned in the Hebrew Bible: Sarah, Miriam, Deborah, Hannah, Abigail, Hulda and Esther. Hulda is said to have been a descendant of Joshua and Rahab the heroic harlot of Joshua Chapter 2. Because Hulda lived in the time of the Prophet Jeremiah, the Rabbis wonder why it was not this more famous prophet who was consulted about what was found written in the Book discovered in the Temple. Several answers to this question are provided, for example, that Jeremiah had gone to bring back the Ten Lost Tribes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But more psychologically appealing is the explanation that Hulda was consulted \u201cbecause women are more tender-hearted\u201d and would pray for those who consulted her (see also Rashi to II Kings 22:14). According to Midrash Pesiqta Rabbati (Chapter 26), Jeremiah would prophecy in the market-places, Zephaniah would prophecy in the synagogues and Hulda would prophecy among the women of her generation. According to the Aramaic Targum to II Kings 22:14, Hulda even had a school (\u2018ulpana\u2019) in Jerusalem. Despite the Rabbis\u2019 positive attitude to Hulda, they criticize as unbecoming for a woman her l\u00e8se-majest\u00e9 in referring to Josiah as \u201cthe man\u201d, rather than as the king (II Kings 22:15). Perhaps this reflects the regrettable fact that her name, Hulda, means in Hebrew \u201cweasel\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Second Temple in Jerusalem, two of the five gates to the Temple Court, those in the South, were referred to as the Hulda Gates (Mishnah Middot 1:3). These can still be seen, sealed up since the Middle Ages, in the southern wall of the Temple Mount. Rashi (to II Kings 22:14) connects these to the \u201cMishneh\u201d (\u201csecond\u201d section?) where Hulda is said to have resided in Jerusalem.
