The Babylonians, who first entered the region during the reign of Hezekiah, now asserted themselves and subjugated Judah, whose attempted rebellion was suppressed by the combined forces of \u201cChaldeans, Arameans, Moabites, and Ammonites\u201d (2), in punishment for the crimes committed by Manasseh.<\/span><\/p>\n

Only three months into the reign of Jehoiachin, Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem but Jehoiachin did not capitulate until the eighth year of his reign (or the seventh, as per Jeremiah 52:28)\u2014implying that he withstood the pressure for 8 years, which was no mean feat. The royal family was exiled and the treasures of both palace and Temple were taken, even \u201cthe golden decorations in the Temple of the LORD, which King Solomon of Israel had made, as the LORD had warned\u201d (13), a reference to 20:17: \u201cA time is coming when everything in your palace which your ancestors have stored up to this day will be carried off to Babylon; nothing will remain behind, said the LORD.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Along with the royal family, the Babylonians exiled Jerusalem\u2019s upper class, leaving behind \u201conly the poorest of the peasantry\u201d (14). Nebuchadnezzar set up a vassal king in Jehoiachin\u2019s stead\u2014his uncle Mattaniah, \u201cchanging his name to Zedekiah\u201d (17). What was the purpose of the name change? Mattaniah means \u201cgift of God,\u201d and Zedekiah means \u201cjustice of God.\u201d According to several of the medieval exegetes (Rashi, Kara, Radak), the change was intended by Nebuchadnezzar to convey the message to Zedekiah that God would justifiably deal with him if he were to rebel.<\/span><\/p>\n
