As constant and comprehensive as Hezekiah\u2019s loyalty was to God, so was Manasseh\u2019s inclination to revert to the worst practices of his predecessors\u2014typified here by reference to King Ahab and to the ubiquitous high-places (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bamot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) whose allure only Hezekiah had been able to withstand (3). Indeed, his very name\u2014derived from the verbal root <em>n-sh-h<\/em>\u00a0, &#8220;to forget&#8221; (see Gen. 41:51)\u2014personifies his neglect of God and His ways. The Mishnah (Sanhedrin 10:1-2) declares that he is one of the three Israelite kings who has no share in the world to come, and yet, his reign of 55 years exceeded that of any other king of either Judah or Samaria. Go figure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A particularly striking feature of the bill of particulars submitted about Manasseh is contained in verse 6: \u201cHe consigned his son to the fire; he practiced soothsaying (<em>`<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">onen<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and divination (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nihesh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and consulted ghosts (\u2018<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ob<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and familiar spirits (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yid`onim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); he did much that was displeasing to the LORD, to vex Him. This recalls Deut. 18:10: \u201cLet no one be found among you who consigns his son or daughter to the fire, or who is an augur, a soothsayer (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me`onen<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a diviner (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menahesh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a sorcerer.\u201d One gets the impression that Manasseh made a point of locating cardinal prohibitions in the Torah and deliberately violating them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the people followed Manasseh, \u201cTherefore the LORD spoke through His servants the prophets\u201d (10) to rebuke them. Under the reasonable assumption that if Isaiah had been one of those prophets he would have been named, the Sages\u2014in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seder Olam<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a work of rabbinic chronology\u2014speculated on the identities of these anonymous prophets, naming them as Joel, Nahum, and Habakkuk.
