But both the Tanakh and the rabbis highlight a further passion of this righteous king: his fervor for Torah study.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[The Talmud speaks of] the oil of Hezekiah, which burned in the synagogues and schools. What did he do? He planted a sword by the door of the schoolhouse and proclaimed, &#8220;He who will not study the Torah will be pierced with the sword.&#8221; Search was made from Dan to Beer Sheba, and no ignoramus was found; from Gabbath to Antipatris \u2014 no boy or girl, man or woman was found who was not thoroughly versed in the laws of ritual purity and impurity (Sanhedrin 94b).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hezekiah enforces national Torah study. His methods are admittedly violently coercive, but the product is a civilian population that is thoroughly versed in the minutiae of Jewish law. Of course, this is an aggadic tradition. But what are its roots? Is there any biblical evidence of Hezekiah&#8217;s interest in spreading Torah knowledge? The book of Proverbs provides some evidence of Hezekiah&#8217;s commitment to study:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These following are also the proverbs of Solomon, compiled by the men of Hezekiah king of Judah (25:1).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This verse introduces chapters 25-31 of the book of Proverbs, and indicates that the &#8220;original,&#8221; pre-Hezekiah book of Proverbs comprised only twenty-four chapters. But Hezekiah published an &#8220;expanded edition&#8221; of the book, including as yet unpublished writings of Solomon. The conclusion we should come to is that Hezekiah invested in the publication of wisdom literature, such as Proverbs. His interest was the promotion of national Torah education. Similarly, the Talmud states: &#8220;Hezekiah and his company wrote Isaiah, Proverbs, Song of Songs, and Ecclesiastes&#8221; (Bava Batra 15a). The impression is that Hezekiah actively pursued the writing, publication, and distribution of manuscripts that predated his time. The works mentioned are all literature that delve deeply into the religious experience.
