When darkness reigns, in exile from the light;<\/span>
\n<\/span>When gray devours every speck of white<\/span>
\n<\/span>On all our prison walls; when in the night,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Vast hordes of wings are heard, prepared to fight<\/span>
\n<\/span>Against the regal throne concealed from sight,<\/span>
\n<\/span>We yearn for home, in exile from the king. \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For we, the former subjects of the king,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Who in the royal palace used to light<\/span>
\n<\/span>Bright candles in the throne-room built of white<\/span>
\n<\/span>And iridescent gems, have lost our sight,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Our candles and our names, yet try to fight<\/span>
\n<\/span>Forgetfulness by dreaming in the night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each night we dream our exile ends; each night<\/span>
\n<\/span>We dream we glimpse the royal throne, our sight<\/span>
\n<\/span>Returned at last, as royal counselors fight<\/span>
\n<\/span>The storm-winds of the night, and crown the king,<\/span>
\n<\/span>His daughter and his queen; we dream a light<\/span>
\n<\/span>Embraces us and bathes the palace white.<\/span><\/p>\n

But we awake to days dyed gray no white<\/span>
\n<\/span>Can bleach; to hungry bats we try to fight<\/span>
\n<\/span>As they attack our eyes; to failing light<\/span>
\n<\/span>That oozes from a moonless, starless night.<\/span>
\n<\/span>And in our dungeon, we neglect the king<\/span>
\n<\/span>Who knows the way that could revive our sight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Have any royal counselors kept their sight?<\/span>
\n<\/span>And do they go on searching through the night<\/span>
\n<\/span>For maps that could retrieve our missing king,<\/span>
\n<\/span>His scattered family and his ring?\u00a0 Bring light<\/span>
\n<\/span>To those who seek the king, who bow to white<\/span>
\n<\/span>Though darkness reigns, who will not cease to fight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When will our exile end?\u00a0 For who can fight<\/span>
\n<\/span>To consecrate the palace of the king<\/span>
\n<\/span>If eyes are blind, incapable of sight,<\/span>
\n<\/span>If hands are weak, if skin is leprous-white?<\/span>
\n<\/span>Our ears detect the coming wing of night<\/span>
\n<\/span>That swarms with bats; how dare we sing of light?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

O king whose throne lies hidden, grant us sight<\/span>
\n<\/span>And strength to fight the taloned wing of night<\/span>
\n<\/span>With royal swords of white and sacred light.<\/span><\/p>\n
