At the start, it all looks bright for the young monarch, and the anonymous narrator tells us that he did what was proper in God’s eyes “all the days that Jehoiada the priest taught him.” That seemingly superfluous comment about his teacher is a tip off to the careful reader: things are going to veer in a bad direction, but his teacher, Jehoiada brings out the young king’s best potential. We each do better when we work together.

The king proposes to his teacher and the other priests that money devoted to holy purposes should be utilized to repair the Temple and the ways in which it has deteriorated with time. It is left to each individual priest to divert whatever funds might seem necessary for that purpose. The king and his priests may be filled with the best of intentions, but it becomes apparent that the money isn’t being used for rebuilding and repair. So he creates a new system in which the money is no longer accessible and can only be retrieved by a committee comprised of the high priest and the kings’s scribe, that is to say, representatives of the Royal House and representatives of the priesthood, together. With this new system, the repairs actually begin and adequate resources funds these repairs.

The innovation here is a combination of transparency and accountability. No longer relying on private acts of goodness, or personal commitments to long-term policy, the genius of this new approach is that is recognizes that people act better when we act in concert. As we watch each other, we inspire a higher level of achievement. We all reach a little higher when someone is watching, and even better than that when they are not only watching but reporting on what they see.

And the opposite is true as well: when we no longer have another trusted person to use as a sounding board, to react to our ideas and evaluate them with us, to implement and to witness with us, we can easily veer astray. That is precisely what happens to the King. Without his trusted teacher and advisor, the king falls on precisely the kind of bad habits that the Books of Kings condemns. According to Midrash Shemot Rabbah 8:2, he permits the resurgence of idolatry that will ultimately bring the Temple down. In the end, he loses the independence of the kingdom and becomes subservient to the neighboring royal bully, King Hazael of Aram. In the wake of that weakness, his own servants rise up and assassinate their former master.

We often take credit for our own successes, forgetting all the other people who contributed along the way. We often take credit for our own virtues and strengths, again ignoring everyone who makes us who we are. No one is an island; we’re all in this together.

2019-10-03
