  1. The boys is going on 30\u2026<\/em> \u201cAll his days Jehoash did what was pleasing to the LORD, as the priest Jehoiada instructed him\u201d (12:3). But in the 23rd year of his reign, when he is old enough, he challenges the accepted way the priests managed the affairs, and demands to increase the renovations and upkeep. Is this only a minor disagreement about certain priorities in the Temple, or his expressing a desire for more independence in his rule?<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Renovations<\/em>. Why does the Temple need fixing up? 28 chapters and about 140 years have passed since it was built in the days of Solomon. From the list of artisans who were paid for their work, it seems that there was a great deal of it (12-13).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Acting on faith<\/em>. When there is trust, you don\u2019t have to show receipts: \u201cNo check was kept on the men to whom the money was delivered to pay the workers; for they dealt honestly\u201d (16).<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. It\u2019s a mystery<\/em>. Why did the rebellion break out? Who are the assassins who killed Yoash, with the strange names of Jozabad [Jozacar] and Jehozabad? Is there tension between the king and the priesthood? Is there a connection to the payments to Hazael of Aram from the treasures of the Temple? The whole episode raises many questions, and suppositions. What\u2019s clear is that this is not a rebellion against the House of David, since the boy, Amatziah, is crowned in place of his father. By the way, in a mere two chapters, he will, \u201cput to death the courtiers who had assassinated his father the king\u201d
