  1. All in the family.<\/em> Athaliah, the queen, is of course from the house of Ahab, king of Israel. Like the rest of the house of Ahab, she too has given her blessing to Baal worship.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Women<\/em>. Three of the central characters in the chapter are women. Athaliah – the murderous queen, Jehosheba, the daughter and the sister who saves the heir apparent, and the wetnurse.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The anatomy of a coronation.<\/em> Crowning Joash was done in the House of God, and while that was atypical, it seems that the rest of the ceremony was according to protocol. Verses 12 and 14 mention the essential components: crown, insignia, anointing, clapping, \u201clong live the king!,\u201d a stage and trumpets.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The people of the land\u2026<\/em> Who is this \u201cpeople of the land\u201d (<\/span>am ha\u2019aretz<\/span><\/i>) – the public masses? The nobility? Loyalists of the kingdom of Judah? Commentators and scholars suggest a range of answers.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. The child ruler<\/em>. Joash, who was saved from the massacre as a baby, was only seven years old when he was crowned king, so that actually it was Jehoiada the priest who remained the responsible adult, and set the religious tone of the regime. How will Joash turn out as an adult? Will he continue the ways of his mentor here, or will he return to those of his ancestors?
