The Talmud views Elisha as a paradigm of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shimush talmidei chachamim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a relationship based less in study and more in lending practical assistance to Elijah: \u201cR. Yohanan further said in the name of R. Shimon b. Yohai: The service of the Torah is greater than the study thereof. As it is stated, \u2018Here is Elisha, the son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah\u2019 (II Kings 3:11). It is not stated, \u2018who learned,\u2019 but \u2018who poured water.\u2019 This teaches that the service of the [teachers of] Torah is greater than its study\u201d (Berakhot 7a).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this teaching, the student imbibes the wisdom of his master more by loyal devotion and service than by direct instruction. It is the personal example, the small moments, the everyday conversations, the incidental observations, that shape the student, rather than rousing speeches and public lectures. This dedication is the chief factor in Elisha&#8217;s apprenticeship at the feet of Elijah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, their relationship is expressed in higher terms than as teacher and student. As Elijah ascends heavenward, Elisha exclaims, &#8220;My father, my father!&#8221; (II Kings 2:12). Elisha perceives Elijah as a parent. This brings to mind Elisha&#8217;s original encounter with Elijah, when Elisha said, &#8220;Let me kiss my mother and father and I will [then] follow you&#8221; (I Kings 19:20). As he began his association with Elijah, he bade an emotional farewell to his parents. But now after his formative apprenticeship, possibly years afterward, Elijah has become a spiritual parent to Elisha.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbinic literature is familiar with the notion of a rabbi adopting a parental role: &#8220;For his father brought him into this world, but his rabbi who taught him wisdom brings him into the World to Come&#8221; (Mishna Bava Metzia 2:11). Furthermore, when the Talmud looks for a proof text that a student must tear his clothes on the death of his rabbi just like a child for a parent, it turns specifically to Elisha (Moed Katan 26a).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Israel, II Kings: In a Whirlwind, Maggid Books, 2019<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":63310,"id":63310,"title":"Alex Israel -
