The father kisses the sleeping child,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And places him gently on Elijah\u2019s chair.<\/span>
\n<\/span>He picks up the knife,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Hands slightly trembling;<\/span>
\n<\/span>He looks furtively across the tent at his wife,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Then whispers:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor Your salvation have I hoped,<\/span>
\n<\/span> O Lord.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The mother sits to the side, crying<\/span>
\n<\/span>And laughing.<\/span>
\n<\/span>As her husband bends over with the delicate knife,<\/span>
\n<\/span>His hands slightly trembling,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Her eyes close.<\/span>
\n<\/span>She hears her husband whisper<\/span>
\n<\/span>(His eyes turning first to the entrance of the tent):<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cElijah, angel of the covenant,<\/span>
\n<\/span> Stand by my right hand and support me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The knife cuts.<\/span><\/p>\n

The child cries.<\/span><\/p>\n

The father bandages his son<\/span>
\n<\/span>And hands him to the mother to nurse.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the child<\/span>
\n<\/span>Cries;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Or is he<\/span>
\n<\/span>Laughing?<\/span><\/p>\n

For there is a land that includes all lands,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And in this land is a city that includes all cities,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And in this city is a building that includes all buildings,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And this building can be entered only by one<\/span>
\n<\/span>Who cries and laughs, laughs and cries<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Like the child<\/span>
\n<\/span>Who has entered<\/span>
\n<\/span>The covenant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
