At the very end of the chapter, Rehoboam died and was succeeded by his son Abijam. Here is where our chapter picks up the narrative thread, and here is where we get entangled in a web of seemingly incompatible identities.

According to verse 2, Abijam’s mother was Maacah daughter of Abishalom. Yet, when he died and was succeeded by his son Asa, we read in verse 10 that Asa’s mother was also named Maacah daughter of Abishalom. To complicate matters further, the parallel passage in 2 Chronicles reports that Abijah’s mother was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel (13:2), while Asa’s mother is still listed as Maacah (15:16).

Unless Abijah and Asa were actually brothers, rather than father and son—something that runs counter to the explicit sense of the biblical text and has to be discounted—how can we reconcile these discrepancies? Indeed, Radak offered more than one way out of this maze. In his commentary to 2 Chronicles 13:2, he wrote:

Micaiah bat Uriel is Maacah bat Abishalom mentioned above (11:20). There are many such instances in this book wherein one person is known by two names.

However, in his commentary to our chapter he wrote:

Maacah was not Asa’s mother, but his grandmother, and a grandmother can also be called a mother… [Scripture] related Asa to his grandmother because she worshipped idols… and yet he did right in the eyes of God and did not follow after her.

As we read further in our chapter about Asa: “He also deposed his mother Maacah from the rank of queen mother, because she had made an abominable thing for [the goddess] Asherah.
