It even tells us about a particular woman that was the mother of her grandson: Maacah daughter of Abishalom.

According to our chapter, Maacah was the mother of King Abijam and the mother of King Asa son of Abijam as well (15: 2, 10).

One explanation could be that the term “mother” in the Bible indicates biological mother and adoptive mother as well. Maacah was the biological mother of King Abijah and the adoptive mother of her grandson King Asa after a possible death of Asa’s biological mother. As like as Michal daughter of Saul who had no biological sons of her own (2 Samuel 6, 23) but became the adoptive mother of five sons (2 Samuel 21, 8) that were born to her older sister Merab and Adriel (1 Samuel 14, 49; 1 Samuel 18, 19).

A second explanation could be that the term “mother” in the Bible indicates both mother and grandmother. As like as the term “father” in the Bible that indicates not only a father but also a grandfather, a great-grandfather, a great-great-grandfather et cetera. For example, Jacob said: “my fathers Abraham and Isaac” (Genesis 48, 16), even though Abraham was his grandfather. Another example appears in our chapter, which calls Asa’s great-great-grandfather David “his father David” (1 Kings 15, 11).

A third explanation could be that in our chapter fell a mistake concerning the name of the queen mother of Abijah. According to the book of Chronicles, the name of King Abijah’s mother was not Maacah but Micaiah daughter of Uriel of Gibeah (2 Chronicles 13, 2). The book of Chronicles reports that Maacah daughter of Abishalom was King Abijah’s wife and the mother of his son – King Asa (2 Chronicles 15, 16). Maybe the similarity between the names Micaiah and Maacah was the cause of some confusion.

2019-09-08
