In between, it proceeds to enumerate the members of Solomon’s retinue, presenting some surprises and several questions.

First of all, verse 3 names two people who served as scribes (sof’rim) and one who was a recorder (mazkir). What, exactly, were their functions? Rashi identified the former as the court chroniclers and the latter as a registrar who insured that the king dealt with the cases that came before him in their proper sequential order.

Verse 2 names Azariah son of Zadok as “the priest” while verse 4 names Zadok and Abiathar as priests (kohanim). This raises two questions: (1) we know that Zadok had a son named Ahimaatz (who carried messages for the Davidic underground in 2 Samuel 17), but who is Azariah? And (2) how could Abiathar serve as a kohen when we were told earlier that Solomon dismissed him (2:27)? Radak identified Azariah as the son of Ahimaatz and, therefore, Zadok’s grandson, since it is not unusual for biblical genealogies to conflate the two. He also opined that this Zadok cannot be the one who was dismissed by Solomon, but “another priest with the same name.” In fact, a look at the register of high priests in 1 Chronicles 5 indicates that from the inception of the First Temple until its destruction (spanning some ten generations), Zadok (or, Jehozadak), Ahitub, and Azariah account for half of their names.

Verse 5 names “the king’s companion,” a title we encountered previously as belonging to Hushai, who served David in that capacity (2 Samuel 15:37). Radak defined the position as “he was with him constantly,” and, perhaps, in contemporary terms he would be designated “the first friend.” And finally, verse 6 identifies Adoniram
