Brace yourself: this chapter is boring. After that dramatic story of King Solomon deciding which is the real mother (by offering to saw the baby in half!), it might be hard to equal that level of drama and suspense. But we are now on the other end of the spectrum: boring, boring, boring.<\/span><\/p>\n

And it turns out that is precisely what ancient Israel was hankering for. So do we. With Solomon now safely established as king and Israel\u2019s enemies militarily at bay, we get one of those endless lists of names and occupations for which the Hebrew Bible is notorious. Each and every major bureaucrat in Solomon\u2019s court, his chief counselors and his military leaders are all given their spot on the list. Then comes the twelve commissioners who were appointed to govern in each of the districts by which his kingdom was administered. As if the names weren\u2019t tedious enough, we\u2019re also treated to a description of the geographical highlights of each of the twelve regions, each now governed through an administrative structure through which the morality of Torah may be applied consistently.<\/span><\/p>\n

Small wonder that the chapter ends with a sense of calm satisfaction: \u201cJudah and Israel were as numerous as the sands of the sea; they ate and drank and were content.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Here, at last, is the promise that might allow Israel\u2019s people to flourish: good government, rational administrative structure, wise policies based on the ethical principles that the Torah and its teachings propound. We\u2019ve already seen that Solomon intends not to discriminate between the rich and the poor, the famous and the obscure. Instead, he is offering his wisdom in the service of one equal law for all. Small wonder that Israel is content.<\/span><\/p>\n

Government that is based on moral principles, administered rationally, and applied equally, remains the great dream of the monarchy of Israel, and still remains the dreams of contemporary democracies as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And we, the people, we still dream of living in a time sufficiently safe, prosperous, and just that we all have access to food, drink, and the pursuit of
