Much can be said about names and naming conventions (a whole field of study, onomastics, is devoted to it). However, here we will look briefly at a couple characters in our chapter in order to highlight some key trends in naming.

The rabbinic conception of naming places great significance in the name one is given, saying that it can even affect one’s life. We read in the Talmud (Berachot 7b):

From where do we derive that the name affects one’s life? Rabbi Eliezer said that the verse says: “Go, see the works of the Lord, who has made desolations [shamot] upon the earth” (Psalms 46:9). Do not read the word as shamot, rather as shemot, names.

The Maharsha interprets this text to mean that God’s works are drawn down into this world through a person’s name. Thus, a person’s name is the basis for how his life will turn out.

Therefore, it should come as no surprise to the reader that we read in 1 Kings 5:5 that “all the days of Solomon, Judah and Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba dwelt in safety, everyone under his own vine and under his own fig tree.” In other words, the meaning of Solomon’s name ‘peace’ was indicative of the domestic peace and tranquility that took hold in the land.

If you’re looking for a fun fact that will make you the center of attention at a cocktail party, you can tell them that this type of name (one which is aptly or peculiarly suited to its owner) is called an aptronym.

Moreover, certain names are repeated. Arnold Ehrlich points out (2 Samuel 14:27) that already in the Bible we see people being named after deceased relatives, saying that “the Hebrews were accustomed to call their children names after their deceased ancestors and relatives…we see this, for example, with the priestly family, in which the names Ahitob, Amriya, and Zadok are repeated.”

<span day.

2018-09-24
