At the same time, this vignette of geriatric impotence is a pointed reversal of the Bathsheba story that brought down God\u2019s curse on the house of David, triggering all the subsequent troubles of dynastic succession. There too, David was lying in his bed or couch (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mishkav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as in verse 47 here), and there, too, he sent out emissaries to bring back a beautiful young woman to lie with him, though to antithetical purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From: Robert Alter, <em>The Hebrew Bible<\/em>, vol. 2: Prophets, W.
