In 1914, the German army occupied their town. On one Shabbat my great grandfather was sitting having lunch in his home. He noticed a group soldiers approaching the front door of their home. He immediately told his children to run out the back door and run into the woods. The soldiers barged into the house, took my great grandfather with other Jewish men to thresh straw on Shabbat.<\/p>\n<p>As a final humiliation &#8211; just like in 2 Samuel chapter 10 &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0<strong>they shaved off half of their beards.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>great grandfather was so humiliated he tied a kerchief around his face for several weeks until his beard grew back.
