David already knows that it will be his son, Solomon, who builds the Temple, not he himself (2 Samuel Chapter 7), and he is OK with that. In fact, immediately after getting that news, David began collecting materials for the Temple of the future (8:6-7). With respect to the land he\u2019s now purchasing, the land-owner is prepared to give it to David, but David insists on paying full value.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More importantly, although he\u2019s a wealthy King who could afford to just buy the land outright, our Sages explain that, in fact, David divvied up the cost between all 12 tribes. The Temple would not be David\u2019s Temple, nor Solomon\u2019s Temple as it\u2019s often referred to, it would in fact belong, legally and physically, to the entirety of the Jewish people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we mourn the loss of the Temple and all it stood for on Tisha B\u2019Av, we weren\u2019t mourning the loss of THE Temple, we were mourning the loss of OUR Temple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following that penultimate verse is confirmation that God answered David\u2019s prayers for the salvation of his people. These final two verses of 2 Samuel are what should underscore our ultimate understanding of David\u2019s life. Throughout his hardships, foibles and missteps, of which there were many, is the ever-present knowledge that David was chosen by God, first to be a King over Israel, and to be for eternity the lineage from which our Messiah will come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Sages describe David as one of the seven shepherds of our nation, in the same company as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron and Joseph. And yet this Book goes to great lengths to describe an imperfect leader, struggling with his own moral and spiritual challenges, often with short-term unsuccessful outcomes, yet always striving to better his character and the moral backbone of his nation. David\u2019s legacy, unlike any of his predecessors or any leader to follow, is as singularly unique as the man himself. This warrior, King, nation-leader, imperfect human-being, was also a sensitive poet and composer, whose volume of Psalms (Tehillim) is to this day a foundation of heartfelt prayer offered to God by the Jewish people. Like He did for David in the final verse of this Book, may God also answer the prayers of those who invoke David\u2019s words and vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>image: stylized depiction of\u00a0<span
