Three prophets influenced the life of David. First was Samuel, who met young David as a shepherd and told him secretly that he was chosen by God to replace King Saul. Samuel died before his prophecy came true.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second was Gad, who met the young David after his marriage to Princess Michal and his clash with her royal father, while David and his parents were escaping to Moab, and called David back.<\/span><\/p>\n

Third was Nathan, who met the adult David as a king in Jerusalem, blamed him for his severe sin regarding Uriah and Bathsheba, and a few years later helped Bathsheba’s son, Solomon, to be chosen by old King David as his successor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Surprisingly, the last few chapters of 2 Samuel book are not chronological. They are not dealing with old King David nor with Nathan the prophet, but with young King David and the prophet Gad.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is especially true in our chapter, in which Gad gives young King David the opportunity to choose from three optional punishments, and guides David how to stop the chosen punishment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Behind this flashback there seems to be a desire to connect the last story of our book \u2013 2 Samuel \u2013 to the coming stories of the next book \u2013 Kings.\u00a0 By ending our book with the story about King David buying the top of Mount Zion and building an altar for God on it, our chapter builds a bridge to the Book of Kings that tells about building a Temple for God at the same exact place, but by David’s son \u2013 King Solomon<\/span>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
