Reminiscent of the purchase of the burial site of the matriarchs and patriarchs, the Cave of Machpelah, between Abraham and Ephron, this tale concretizes the notion of the rightful, and eternal ownership of Jerusalem to the Jewish people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not surprising that this final act of the book of Samuel II, which chronicles the ups and downs of David\u2019s life, is an act of setting the terms of handover from one generation to the next. Solomon will soon become king, he will soon set in motion the desires of God discussed from the very beginning of David\u2019s kingship, the building of a permanent residence for God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Midrash explains that Jerusalem is the mirror image of a celestial city, representing the conduit point between heaven and earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The very rabbinic notion of the city is in fact the reality between David and God as displayed in this book of Samuel. David was the divine appointed, the conduit between the Jewish people and the Almighty. David\u2019s life and service to the Jewish people set in motion a continued relationship with Jerusalem, and therefore a continued relationship with God. Jerusalem despite her repeated destruction, would remain the focal point of Jewish prayer throughout the ages, and as such, a concrete way in which to maintain a relationship with God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, the most pious would have never faltered in their service to God no matter the trials inflicted upon us. But for many people throughout history, without a physical conduit to God through the aspirational Jerusalem, abandoning our faith and people would have been a real possibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David does not know what trials and tribulations would be presented to his son, but what he does know, is that firmly establishing Jerusalem as the conduit between the next
