A king to succeed in the Davidic line. After all, from David\u2019s perspective it seems like that is the covenant between David and God. There is a broader and more important eternal covenant that would supersede David\u2019s deal, the Covenant revealed to Moses and Israel at Mt. Sinai.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Talmud Bavli, Eruvin 54a, we learn that a fate that has been sealed will become unsealed if conditions change. Nothing is really permanent, we have to earn everything and can never really rest on our laurels. It stands to reason that a descendant of David would need to follow the Covenant to be qualified. No one gets anything automatically anymore. David\u2019s last utterances in verses 5-7, regarding the future and the caretaking of the people by practicing constant vigilance reflect something we have seen as a trend for Jewish communal professionals and leaders and also for lay people, especially in the post-World War II era. Lifetime contracts or serving one community or in one role for an entire career is almost a thing of the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jewish communal life requires of its leadership more accountability today than in the past, and that\u2019s a good thing. We need not be harsh to understand that clergy and professional staff owe to their congregations a fulfillment of their covenantal relationship. At the same time, our institutions owe to their clergy and professionals a degree of loyalty and stability. We are not merely businesses like in the secular world, but we have a responsibility that comes from our understanding of Jewish ethical practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every leader we have as a people is called to account for their actions, as it is in our tradition and as it needs to be in our present day. We need leaders of conscience. Justice Louis Brandeis was famous for the quote, \u201csunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants,\u201d and among David\u2019s last words are another description of that leadership: \u201cOne who rules others justly, one who rules in awe of God, is like the light of morning at sunrise\u201d
