According to the biblical story, David prevailed over the Philistine champion Goliath with a single stone. The sling was a popular weapon in the ancient Middle East, and illustrations from Assyrian palaces show that the sling stones, which could be as large as an adult\u2019s fist, were launched using a non-elastic braided cord that was swung in an arc over the warrior\u2019s head before the stone was released.<\/p>\n<p>image: courtesy of George
