In fact, the chapter shares with us two examples of David\u2019s desire to physically demonstrate his love and devotion to God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, in verse 5, David and all the house of Israel dance alongside the Ark of the Covenant. Here the 15<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century Spanish commentator the Akeidat Yitzchak shares that this dancing and playing of music was to bring the people into the right frame of mind. He contrasts it with the use of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah which stirs up the wells of emotion of those engaged in prayer. The 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century commentator, Malbim, writes that there was a difference between these instruments and display by the people compared to the music made by the tribe of Levi in their Temple service; this was popular music there to engage the entire people in celebration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second example given, in verse 16, sees King David entering the city in full dance, under the gaze of Michal, the daughter of King Saul. This causes her to further despise the enemy of her late father. She later chastises David, accusing him of debasing himself in wild dance. He rebuts the accusation and says that his dancing was not about his honor, but the need to elevate God in front of the entire people. If the King will dance, leading the way in displaying his love to God, then the people will follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Spanish philosophical work, The Duties of the Heart, shares the idea that someone engaging with God, \u201cshould put aside all ego, and renounce personal pride and dignity while he is performing any religious service, whether he is alone or among a crowd of people.\u201d King David didn\u2019t just inspire the people around him in their service to God, he is a constant example as to how we should engage. We are meant to be constantly proud of who we are as Jews \u2013 we should dance in the streets, sing to the heavens, and be completely
