In the book of Deuteronomy (17:15) we see the instruction of how to appoint a king. It is up to the Jewish people yet dependent on God choosing the right candidate. It is the perfect blend of popular monarchy whereby the monarch is the ruler of people, and the divine right of kings, where God is the sole authority to the monarch.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the book of Samuel II, chapter 5, we see this concept play out. The tribes of Israel come to David in Hebron and declare loyalty to him. They acknowledge God\u2019s desire to have David as king, and then the elders make a pact and anoint David as king of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the third anointing David goes through \u2013 first by Samuel (Samuel I, Chapter 16) and then by Judah (Samuel II, Chapter 2) and now here by all of Israel. Each anointing expands David\u2019s power, first he is anointed by God\u2019s instruction, then he fulfills the blessing of Jacob to his paternal ancestor Judah, whereby his descendents would appoint from their midst a King, and then by the entire people of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

In some ways we see these anointings as correlating to the life of David. Shepherd. Warrior. Leader. The shepherd wanders in solitude, caring for his flock but oftentimes going unnoticed. Moshe was also a shepherd, and like David, the only one who was following the journeys of the flock was God. Moses was divinely appointed in his act of shepherd, so too David.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then David acts as warrior, commander of the battlefield. He does not yet have the ability to rally an entire nation around him. Like a warrior, he commands the respect of those who are nearest to him, and so it makes sense that he is anointed by his tribe mates, exalted to lead over them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, he moves from being warrior to leader. He is able to transcend his battlefield experience, into a vision that encompasses all of the people of Israel; he is articulate, visionary, and unifying. So he is finally anointed by the elders of all the land.<\/span><\/p>\n

He is the king with divine right. But his actions endear him to the people, and in doing so he doesn\u2019t become the King of the land of Israel, rather the King of the people of Israel, a continuous kingship that is sung about through the ages.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":61098,"id":61098,"title":"Oil Splash
