  1. Two oaths, one kept, one broken.<\/em>\u00a0Saul sinned when he killed the Gibeonites and transgressed the covenant that was established with them under oath. In contrast, David receives a sort of commendation that he didn\u2019t break his oath to Jonathan, when he refused to turn over Mephiboshet, Jonathan\u2019s son, to the Gibeonites.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. A promise is a promise<\/em>. 88 chapters ago (in Joshua 9), a covenant was made with the Gibeonites, based on false premises, but for all concerned it was clear that, despite the deceit involved, it had to be honored. Why? \u201cBut the Israelites did not attack them, since the chieftains of the community had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. The whole community muttered against the chieftains, but all the chieftains answered the whole community, \u2018We swore to them by the LORD, the God of Israel; therefore we cannot touch them\u201d (Joshua 9:18-19). The story in our chapter proves that indeed, breaking the covenant is not just a matter between the Gibeonites and the Israelites; it concerns Israel and God – God is the one who punishes (verse 1), and the one who responds to pleas of forgiveness (verse 14).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The Lamp of Israel.<\/em> That\u2019s what David\u2019s courtiers call David in verse 17, after they almost lost their king: \u201cIt was then that David\u2019s men declared to him on oath, \u2018\u201cYou shall not go with us into battle any more, lest you extinguish the lamp of Israel!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Who killed Goliath?<\/em> A good question! Everyone knows the answer given 35 chapters ago (I Samuel 17), in the iconic story of David and the slingshot. The answer given here in verse 19 – less so. (Moshe Sokolow on this page, makes the interesting suggestion that this was “Goliath Jr.”, named for his famous, though equally vincible,
