The previous chapter ended on the sour note of an argument between the \u201cmen of Israel\u201d and the \u201cmen of Judah\u201d over whose loyalty to David was greater, an indication that while he had been victorious over Absalom, he had not entirely eliminated the sources of discontent within his kingdom. It is, therefore, not surprising that our chapter opens with an incipient rebellion led by a \u201cworthless\u201d (<\/span>b\u2019li-ya`al<\/span><\/em>) Benjaminite man named Sheba ben Bichri. David assigned the task of recruiting an army to Amasa ben Yether\u2014who, along with Joab and Abishai, had led his forces against Absalom. Inexplicably, Amasa failed to abide by David\u2019s timetable and it was left to Joab and Abishai to take the battle to the enemy. When Amasa finally made an appearance, Joab contrived to kill him and his body was dumped, unceremoniously along the side of the road.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rebels eventually took refuge in a place called Abel of Beth-maacah, which was then besieged by Joab and in imminent danger of being conquered, when a wise woman spoke up. Addressing Joab directly, she challenged his willingness to inflict such extensive collateral damage by destroying an entire city and its population, and proposed surrendering Sheba in return for its safety. They struck a deal, and Sheba\u2019s head was cast down from the city ramparts ending the siege.<\/span><\/p>\n

The role this incident played in the talmudic discussion of the laws of <\/span>piku\u2019ah nefesh<\/span><\/em>\u2014saving lives\u2014is of considerable significance. The question (PT Terumot 8) was raised how to respond if non-Jewish brigands say that if one Jew is surrendered to them they will allow the others to go free, or else they will kill them all. While the law is that they must all face death rather than surrender one of their own, an exception was made for someone who, like Sheba ben Bichri, was guilty of a capital crime (in his case, treason) and, arguably, had already forfeited his life.<\/span><\/p>\n
