His role was to set the Kingdom of Israel up to receive his son Solomon as a king who would usher in a period of calm and unity. Unfortunately for David, his trials and tribulations included his son Absalom turning against him, and ultimately being killed in the battle of the Woods of Ephraim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David withdraws in mourning. Perhaps this time his pain and suffering are too much. He calls out the most heart-wrenching verses of the bible, \u201cMy son Absalom! O my son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you! O Absalom, my son, my son!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joab, King David\u2019s nephew and general, confronts him and berates him for his extravagant mourning. He calls on him to remember his duty, to remember his role, and to remember his people, to do the right thing and to begin leading again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a world of populism, we often see leaders rising up to answer the call of the masses, while neglecting the very many things that they actually want and need. They speak in slogans and soundbites. They neglect the very people they are offering to serve; they neglect their duty to the people who elevated them to their positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David rightly grieves, but when his grief clouds his ability to lead, Joab decides to remind him of his God-given duty to serve the people who crowned him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Israel heads to the polls yet again, as Britain manages its own election and the Brexit negotiations, and as America once again begins the election cycle, we need to remember that our leaders need to be reminded of their duty to their citizens rather than their slogans and populist ideals. We too, should remember that our sacred votes, should focus on policy and identity politics.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":60971,"id":60971,"title":"2sam19-leader
