Several times now we\u2019ve seen King David struggling to separate his personal life from his professional duties. It\u2019s a hard balance to strike and thankfully our society is getting better at understanding the necessarily blurred line between the two. But for a King it\u2019s a much harder line and David\u2019s inability to negotiate it well comes to a head in this chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a minefield of family dynamics playing out in this environment entrenched in nepotism. There\u2019s David, his sons Absalom and Amnon (who were half-brothers), and his nephews Joab and Amasa (who were first cousins). Joab was David\u2019s chief of staff. Absalom had previously killed his brother Amnon in revenge for Amnon\u2019s rape of Absalom\u2019s sister (Amnon\u2019s half-sister and David\u2019s daughter). David is contending with the reality of Amnon\u2019s depravity while nevertheless mourning his death, and at the same time assimilating the personal struggle of loving his son Absalom while knowing he killed Amnon. Amid this landscape of heartache is the treachery of Absalom leading a revolt against the Davidic kingdom to wrest control from his father, during which David instructs his military commander Joab to ensure, revolt notwithstanding, that no harm comes to his son Absalom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alas, David receives news that Absalom, his son and would-be usurper, has been killed. David, the father, is devastated by his personal loss and immerses himself in mourning until Joab reminds him that his divided loyalty is putting his kingdom at risk. Joab, in no uncertain terms, tells David, the King, that this is no time for his personal life to encroach on his professional duties: \u201cGo out and speak to your servants, because I swear if you do not, not one man will remain with you, which will be worse than any other misfortune you\u2019ve experienced (19:8).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

David heeds Joab\u2019s advice which may have saved the kingdom. But ultimately David can\u2019t sustain the separation of personal and professional loyalty.
