This particular incident inspired, inter alia, a late 18<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century opera, \u201cDavid and Absalom,\u201d by Bertoni, a novel, \u201cAbsalom Absalom,\u201d by William Faulkner, and a madrigal, \u201cWhen David Heard,\u201d by the 16<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century English composer Thomas Weelkes, still in vogue and performed at the recent North American Jewish Choral Festival by Kol Ram.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On his way back to Jerusalem, David got to replay some of the incidents that accompanied his earlier departure from that city. Shimei ben Gera apologized for hurling imprecations at him, and David excused him\u2014to the consternation of the Zeruiah brothers. Mephi-Boshet, Jonathan\u2019s sole surviving son, revealed to him that Ziba, his servant, had lied about his disloyalty to David, forcing David to reconsider his earlier edict awarding Mephi-Boshet\u2019s property to Ziba (16:4). However, instead of entirely revoking it, David equivocated, ruling that \u201cyou and Ziba shall split the property\u201d (30).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both these actions by David drew rabbinic attention due to their failure to conform to the norms of equity. Shimei, as argued by Avishay (22), was a traitor, and a despicable one at that for cursing David, and clearly warranted execution. While Ziba was guilty of only lying to the king and even assisted his flight rather than hinder it, he certainly did not deserve to be rewarded by retaining his ill-gotten gains. Rabbinic traditions attempt to resolve both issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a Midrash, Shimei was left alive because he turned out to be an ancestor of Mordechai, thereby allowing divine retribution to take its course when his descendant saw to the execution of Haman whose own ancestor, Agag, King of Amalek, was egregiously spared by King Saul\u2014to whom Shimei was related. And as for the inequitable division of property between Ziba and Mephi-Boshet, a Midrash (cited by Radak) states that it caused a heavenly voice (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bat kol<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to announce the eventual division of David\u2019s kingdom amongst Rehoboam, his grandson, and Jeroboam ben Nebat, who usurped
