  1. My son, Absalom!<\/em>\u00a0David\u2019s cry of anguish that reverberates again and again in verses 1 and 5, and to today, echoes the pain and grief of loss, where there is no comfort to be found. Even a rebellious son is a son.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Now in reverse<\/em>. The way back to Jerusalem for David and his entourage returns through the same human stations that they passed through on their way out of Jerusalem. Both good and bad.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. By the way<\/em> – you\u2019re fired! In verse 14, David fires Joab, and replaces him with the man who had just finished waging a cruel war against him. Amasa the son of Ithra.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. A painful compromise<\/em>. Ten chapters ago, David had done a significant kindness to Mephiboshet: he returned to him all of the property of the house of Saul, and made Ziba his servant. Then, three chapters ago, he believed Ziba, who told him that Mephiboshet had betrayed the king, and ordered the transfer of all the property to Ziba. When David hears Mephiboshet in this chapter give a different version, he doesn\u2019t take the trouble to get to the bottom of the story and find out who is telling the truth, but just announces: \u201cI decree that you and Ziba shall divide the property\u201d (verse 30). Industrial quiet instead of justice. He is judged harshly for this by the sages.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Like thieves in the night<\/em>. Absalom\u2019s rebellion began when he \u201cstole\u201d away the hearts of the people (vayeganev<\/em> – 15:6), and ends with the people stealing back into the city (vayitganev<\/em> – 19:4). The people who won the war don\u2019t celebrate their victory when faced with David\u2019s mourning for his son.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
