Absalom\u2019s extraordinary final moments are fraught with symbolic meanings that have not eluded generations of readers. His hair, the focus of the prince\u2019s narcissistic preoccupations and the mark of his virility, became the instrument of his execution. His mule — the symbol of royal standing — has ridden off, leaving him tangled and exposed, helplessly hanging between heaven and earth with no ground on which to stand. Wishing to end the battle and quell the rebellion as quickly as possible, Joab had no intention of following David\u2019s self-indulgent command. Loyalty to David\u2019s kingship took precedence over David\u2019s own paternal permissiveness and anxiety. Rather than personally defying the king\u2019s command, however, Joab would have much preferred for Absalom\u2019s death to be compassed by an insignificant and dispensable subordinate. He thus chastised the soldier for not finishing Absalom off on the spot, and forgoing the prize he would have gotten for killing the rebel leader.<\/span><\/p>\n
