  1. Ahithophel\u2019s Counsel<\/em>. Ahithophel\u2019s advice would have been quite successful advice for the one for whom it was intended, Absalom. Unlike the meaning it has today in modern Hebrew, where it actually means bad advice (<\/span>see here for discussion of that<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Savage similes<\/em>.This is how Hushai describes David: “as desperate as a bear in the wild robbed of her whelps” and “a brave man with the heart of a lion” (verses 8, 10).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Contested loyalties<\/em>. Who are the people rooting for? Not clear: in verses 18-19, a boy, loyal to Absalom snitches on Jonathan and Ahimaaz, while a woman loyal to David hides them from Absalom\u2019s forces.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Why commit suicide<\/em>? Why does Ahithophel kill himself? Was he so offended that his advice was not followed? Or was he sure that refusing his advice would lead to Absalom\u2019s certain failure, and thus his being punished severely for his betrayal of David?<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Hey cuz<\/em>. Amasa the son of Ithra, Absalom\u2019s commander in chief, and Joab, son of Zeruiah, David\u2019s military leader are cousins: \u201cAmasa was the son of a man named Ithra the Israelite, who had married Abigal, daughter of Nahash and sister of Joab\u2019s mother Zeruiah\u201d (verse 25).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
