Perhaps he had internalized the lessons learned from past abortive attempts to instrumentalize the Ark, revealing the dangers of treating it as a lucky charm or portable divine insurance policy. In justifying this reluctance to agree to move the Ark with him, David made what at first seems to be a genuine expression of piety and humility\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this moment of reckoning, the instrumentalization of what should not be treated instrumentally might have come to an end. While doing everything to survive, David was placing his personal fate in God\u2019s hands. He seemed resigned to being punished, in whatever way God chose, for his crime of killing Uriah. But here again the underlying motives that drive the narrative are mixed and impossible to untangle completely or clearly. David had a second, less pious reason for locating the Ark and the priests in Jerusalem. He could use the priests, the young sons of Zadok, to inform him of what was happening in the city while he lingered in the wilderness. While David needed undercover informants in Absalom\u2019s camp, he didn\u2019t need the dangerously unpredictable Ark to accompany him on his flight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:
