Somehow skeptical of his own powers of persuasion, he hired a stand-in, \u201ca wise woman\u201d of Tekoa (2), a place in Judea between Jerusalem and Hebron, and scripted her role. She was to appear as a woman in protracted mourning and seek David\u2019s intervention to spare the life of her sole surviving son who had murdered his brother and was now the object of the family\u2019s blood vengeance. Speaking quite poetically (her words or Joab\u2019s?) she said, \u201cThus they would quench the last ember remaining to me\u201d leaving her totally bereft (7).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David swore to her that \u201cnary a hair [on his head] will fall to the ground\u201d (11) but the woman requested\u2014and received\u2014his permission to continue, and after uttering yet another particularly poignant phrase (\u201cFor we must all die, and we are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again\u201d, 14), David\u2019s suspicions were raised and she admitted to him that \u201cyour servant Joab instructed me and put all these words in my mouth\u201d (19).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David then ordered Joab to retrieve Absalom from Geshur to Jerusalem, but with the proviso that he remain at home and never see the king (24), to which he consented. After the passage of some two years, however, Absalom grew impatient and he forced Joab into interceding on his behalf once again. Joab acceded, and the chapter ends with Absalom prostrating himself before David and David kissing his wayward son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than this marking the conclusion of the previous episode, it actually set the next one in motion, incorporating yet another literary foreshadowing: The reference to Absalom\u2019s luxuriant hair (26) will reprise itself in an unanticipated fashion (see 2 Samuel
