In order to arrange for Absalom’s peaceful return to Jerusalem, Joab sends a wise woman from Tekoa to tell David a story about herself in a false request: Her son, she says, killed his brother, and now the city’s residents want to kill her other son. She tells David that she doesn’t want to lose her second son too and asks for David’s help.
