\u201cAbsalom, David\u2019s son, had a beautiful sister named Tamar, and Amnon, David\u2019s son, loved her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Love? Was it?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Amnon was so distressed that he fell sick over Tamar his sister, for she was a virgin, and it seemed beyond Amnon to do anything to her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Because she was a virgin. Because she was <\/span>his sister<\/span><\/em>. But Amnon was not trying to marry her. He was distraught because it was beyond him to <\/span>do anything to her<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[So] Amnon lay down and played sick, and the king came to see him\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And Amnon asked the king to send his sister. So David sent Tamar into Amnon\u2019s house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am thinking about all the women sent into men\u2019s domains, vulnerable. All the women who don\u2019t feel safe at work, or merely walking down the street.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tamar went to her brother\u2019s house to care for him. \u201cClear everyone out around me!\u201d he barked.
\nAnd everyone left her. And when Amnon told Tamar to come into his chambers, she followed dutifully.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Generous, caring, altruistic Tamar, who thought she was going to care for the ill and walked into the end of her life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alone in his room, Amnon grabbed her. \u201cCome, lie with me, sister.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But Tamar said no. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t abuse me,\u201d she warned, then, fear mounting upon fear, \u201cwhere would I carry my shame?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She pleaded with her brother, grasping for her salvation\u2014would Amnon ask their father for her hand, instead of doing \u201cthis scurrilous thing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[But] Amnon did not want to heed her voice, and he overpowered her and abused her and bedded her.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am reminded of David\u2019s spotting Bathsheba. Wanting and taking her. Bathsheba\u2019s silence and Tamar\u2019s resistance met the same end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Amnon hated her with a very great hatred, for greater was the hatred with which he hated her than the love with which he had loved her.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Love?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Amnon said, \u2018Get up, go!\u2019 And she said to him, \u2018Don\u2019t!\u2014this wrong is greater than the other you did to me, to send me away now.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But he did send her away. The entitlement of men and the fetishizing of women always leads down the same path\u2014in using women and throwing them away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It took just one moment of self-indulgence for Amnon to destroy Tamar. She would never\u00a0 marry, would never become a mother in Israel. Her father would do nothing, enabling his son to be an unimpeded sexual predator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thousands of years later, men and power continue to protect men and power, enabling the Harvey Weinsteins and the Jeffrey Epsteins of the world to dehumanize women, violating them and leaving them to suffer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How little has changed since the days of Tamar.<\/span><\/p>\n
