Love and hate are often considered opposites but, as we see in today\u2019s story of Amnon and Tamar, at times, they are very close and quickly interchangeable. Following his friend\u2019s advice, Amnon pretends to be sick, and asks to send for his beautiful half-sister Tamar, who he claims to love, to visit him and bring him food. When she comes in, he sends everyone else out, tricks her to come near, grabs her and rapes her. As soon as the act is over, the text tells us that Amnon hated her \u201ca great hatred, for the hate he hated her is greater from the love he loved her.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Talmud (Sanhedrin 21a) is likewise surprised by this quick turn of events and wonders, what happened that caused Amnon\u2019s intense and immediate hatred? <\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi Yitz\u1e25ak says: While he raped her, a hair [<\/span>nima<\/span><\/em>] of hers became tied around his penis and caused him to be one whose penis has been severed. The Gemara asks: But if one of her hair became tied around his penis, what did she do? Why would Amnon hold this against her? Rather, say that she intentionally tied a hair around his penis during intercourse, and she made him one whose penis has been severed in order to take revenge on him, and for this he hated her.<\/span><\/p>\n

By their far-fetched response (to me), the sages seem incredibly baffled by Amnon\u2019s hatred. Perhaps they think of Shechem Ben Hamor\u2019s rape of Dinah, who after \u201claying with her by force\u201d, cleaved to her and loved her (Genesis 34:2-3). For such a quick turn of events, they suggest, Tamar had to do something to him. Not that she was unjustified to do so, nor was she punished for this act (to cause someone to be <\/span>krut shofcha<\/span><\/em>– of a severed penis). But they can\u2019t help but wonder, that something happened.<\/span><\/p>\n

Malbim, on the other hand,\u00a0<\/span>offers a different insight: Tamar, accordingly, had nothing to do with the quick change in Amnon\u2019s feelings, but rather, it was all Amnon himself. For as soon as the spark of desire in Amnon was extinguished, the love, which was nothing but egotistical self-love, faded away. That\u2019s when Amnon recognized the awfulness of his doing, and hated the one who caused it, which is no one but himself. Therefore, it says that \u201cthe hate is greater [when it comes] from the love \u2013 <\/span>g\u2019dola ha\u2019sin\u2019a me\u2019ha\u2019ahava<\/span><\/em>\u201d \u2013 the “love” itself was the reason for the hatred\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n
