  1. Parental permission.<\/em> In this chapter, David approves, not once, but twice, his sons\u2019 requests. He agrees to Tamar going to visit Amnon, and then agrees to allow Amnon to visit Absalom for the sheep shearing. Twice he was at a crossroads where unwittingly he gave allowed the opportunities for horrible crimes to be committed.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Brother-sister<\/em>. The words \u201cbrother\u201d and \u201csister\u201d appear no less than 21 times in this chapter. The strong emphasis on the sibling relationship, directs us to judge Amnon as someone who raped his own sister, and see Absalom as her brother avenging her victimization, and ask: what\u2019s going on here with David the dad?<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Yonadab\u2019s \u201cwisdom.\u201d<\/em> To what extent was Yonadab\u2019s advice immoral? Read his words in verse 5. He\u2019s smart enough to phrase his words in a way that doesn\u2019t implicate himself afterwards…<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Sending the victim away is worse than the rape itself.<\/em> That\u2019s Tamar\u2019s feeling, anyway, in verse 16: \u201cShe pleaded with him, \u2018Please don\u2019t commit this wrong; to send me away would be even worse than the first wrong you committed against me.\u2019\u201d The law in Deuteronomy 22 mentions that, given the reality of women\u2019s lives in that period, getting married to the rapist was actually to the woman\u2019s benefit: \u201cShe shall be his wife. Because he has violated her, he can never have the right to divorce her\u201d (verse 29).<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. 6=6.<\/em> The root sh-ch-b (\u05e9\u05db\u05d1, lay with, have intercourse) appears 6 times in chapters 11-12, in the story of David and Bathsheba. And it appears 6 times here, a clear allusion for those who didn\u2019t see the connection between the two stories.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. That\u2019s two (out of four)<\/em>. Regarding the thread that what is happening is David\u2019s fourfold punishment (see here<\/a>), David loses his second son here.
